PC vs Consolas

Given the antics of earlier this month with the Nvidia Super and AMD 5700 series launches, The RTX 2080 Super's arrival is maybe something of an anticlimax. The RTX 2070 Super is already faster than anything AMD has in a majority of games, which means the RTX 2080 Super isn't competing against AMD, but with its own siblings.

There are several questions that need answering though. Firstly, just how close does Nvidia's latest Super card get to RTX 2080 Ti performance? We know now that Nvidia is not retiring its RTX flagship, but the RTX 2080 does indeed have a very limited shelf life as Nvidia has confirmed the RTX 2080 Super will be replacing it. This suggests the new card is going to be doing a similar thing to the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 super - offering a little more performance than the original Turing-based cards rather than stepping on the toes of cards above them.

Taking a look at the specifications above, it's fairly clear that the RTX 2080 Ti remains the beast of the RTX series. The RTX 2080 Super adds two more streaming multiprocessors, noticeably higher memory frequencies, 8 Tensor FLOPS and 8 texture units to the specifications of the RTX 2080, with noticeably higher texel fill-rates and memory bandwidth as a result.

However, there's still only 8GB of GDDR6 memory - what we're not looking at here are the kind of leaps we saw with the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super, with the former gaining 2GB memory, while the latter was essentially a cut-down RTX 2080.

Nvidia was keen to state that the RTX 2080 Super is essentially offering a little more performance for slightly less cash. For the moment, this appears to hold true - it's own website offers the older RTX card for $799, although you can find RTX 2080's on Amazon right now for a little under $700. All depends, then, on the actual retail price of the RTX 2080 Super.

If partner cards retail for between $700 and $800, that's essentially where the RTX 2080 sits now. It's not going to warrant an upgrade if you have an RTX 2080, but if the performance is noticeably better, then the RTX 2080 Super will quickly make the older card obsolete. On the other hand, there could be some bargain RTX 2080's around over the next few days as stocks are cleared.
